Eastern traditions have defined chakras as vortices of energy located at specific places in the body. These chakras act as energy receivers, generators
and transformers. Universal energy enters at the crown chakra and earth
energy enters at the base chakra; these energies flow up and down the
centre of the body meeting at the major chakras. Individual chakras
transform the energies to vibrate at the appropriate frequency required for the total system.
Beyond the physical body but penetrating it are several
interconnecting layers of energy; these make up the energy field
otherwise known as the aura. The aura is made up of several energetic layers that radiate outwards and around the physical form; the closest three include the etheric, emotional and mental layers. Energy and information are constantly exchanging between the chakras and the aura.
Below you'll find an introduction to each of the seven main chakras
although there are actually numerous minor chakras throughout the
body. The seven major chakras are located along the spine and govern
different organs, glands and nerves (endocrine system and the nervous
system). Each chakra, due to its vibrational frequency, is linked to a specific colour.
Root Chakra (Red) – Begins at the base of your spine representing your physical identity, sense of security and connects you to the earth and its energies.
Sacral Chakra (Orange) – Is located just below your navel and represents your emotional identity, self-gratification and reproductive health.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow) – Found just below your sternum and above your navel. This is the source of your personal power, self-definition and ego identity.
Heart Chakra (Green) – In the middle of your upper chest corresponding to your social identity, harmony, love and compassion.
Throat Chakra (Light Blue) – Located at the throat and is all about self-expression and our creative identity.
Brow/Third Eye Chakra (Indigo Blue) – Is found just between your eyes, and is the seat of self-reflection and your intuition.
Crown Chakra (Violet) – Directly at the crown of your head connecting you to self-knowledge, spirit and universal energy.
